Antimicrobial Peptide Magainin 1 was originally isolated from the skin of the African frog Xenopus laevis. The 23 amino acids containing peptide, belongs to the group of peptide antibiotics with antibacterial, antiviral and antiparasitic activities. Magainin 1 impresses with a very broad-spectrum of non-specific activities against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, yeasts, fungi and herpes simplex virus. It induces also osmotic lysis of protozoa. Magainin forms an alpha-helix in membrane environments and disrupts the electrochemical gradients across the cell membranes.
